About this variety
Jerusalem Cherry Ornamental Seeds (Solanum pseudocapsicum)
The Jerusalem Cherry (Solanum pseudocapsicum) is a captivating ornamental plant known for its vibrant, cherry-like fruits and lush, glossy foliage. Despite its name, it is not related to true cherries. This stunning plant is perfect for adding a touch of elegance to gardens, patios, or as an indoor decorative plant.
Plant Characteristics
• Growth Habit: Compact and bushy perennial shrub, growing up to 30–60 cm in height.
• Foliage: Dark green, oval-shaped leaves that provide a dense and attractive backdrop.
• Fruits: Small, round, and glossy fruits that start green and mature to vivid shades of orange or red. These fruits remain on the plant for an extended period, making it a long-lasting decorative feature.
• Toxicity: While beautiful, the fruits are toxic if ingested and should be kept out of reach of children and pets.
Decorative Appeal
Jerusalem Cherry is highly valued as an ornamental plant, especially during the holiday season, when its bright fruits resemble festive decorations. It is perfect for container gardening or as a houseplant.
Growing Jerusalem Cherry from Seeds
1. Seed Sowing:
• Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Use well-draining potting soil and sow seeds shallowly.
• Maintain a temperature of 20–25°C for optimal germination, which typically occurs in 2–3 weeks.
2. Transplanting:
• Move seedlings to individual pots or garden beds once they are sturdy and the threat of frost has passed.
3. Location and Soil:
• Jerusalem Cherry thrives in full sun to partial shade. Use fertile, well-draining soil for the best results.
Care and Maintenance
• Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid overwatering. Allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings.
• Pruning: Trim the plant occasionally to maintain its compact shape and encourage bushier growth.
• Fertilization: Feed monthly with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season to support fruit and foliage development.
