About this variety
Persicaria longiseta seeds
This packet contains 30 seeds of Persicaria longiseta, an accepted annual species in the knotweed family. Common English names include bristly lady's-thumb, Asiatic smartweed and low smartweed.
Also known as: Bristly lady's-thumb, Asiatic smartweed, Low smartweed, Oriental lady's-thumb, Tufted knotweed, Inutade, Polygonum longisetum and Polygonum caespitosum var. longisetum.
Plant character
Flora of North America describes ascending, branching plants about 30–80 cm tall, with lance-shaped leaves, slender pinkish flower clusters and shiny dark three-angled seeds. Kew records a broad native range from Pakistan through East Asia.
Sowing
Sow thinly in moist, free-draining seed compost and cover lightly. Keep the medium consistently moist without standing water. Bright light and mild temperatures support sturdy growth. Once seedlings are established, transplant carefully to their final position.
Growing conditions
The species is associated with moist ground, pond margins, open woodland edges and similar temperate habitats. Choose a site with reliable moisture and enough space for an annual plant to branch. Container culture can help keep growth managed and makes moisture control easier.
Growth rate, flowering time and final size vary with climate, soil moisture and care.
