About this variety
White bat flower (Tacca palmata) is a shade-loving tropical perennial with deeply lobed leaves and white, bat-shaped flowers with long trailing 'whiskers'. It needs high humidity and indirect light, so most growers keep it in a pot indoors. The packet holds 5 seeds.
Conditions it needs
- Indirect light: in nature it grows on shaded, moist forest floors.
- High humidity; occasional misting helps.
- Consistently moist, never dry soil.
- A well-draining, nutrient-rich mix of peat, perlite and sand.
What the plant looks like
Dark green leaves are deeply divided into 3–13 lobes, each 7–36 cm long and 8–40 cm wide. The flower stalk can reach 80 cm, and the flowers measure up to about 30 cm (12 in) across. After flowering it forms fleshy, bright red, ribbed fruits about 1 cm wide.
Where it comes from
Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. It suits tropical and subtropical conditions; elsewhere grow it in a container indoors.
