About this variety
Solanum trilobatum is a thorny perennial climber, 1.5–2 m long, with three-lobed leaves and small purple star-shaped flowers. It needs a trellis or other support. The packet holds 15 seeds.
Also known as: Purple Fruited Pea Eggplant, Thai Nightshade.
Sowing
- Soak the seed in warm water for 12–24 hours.
- Sow 1–2 cm deep in well-draining mix.
- Keep it at 20–30 °C; seedlings usually appear in 2–3 weeks.
Give it something to climb
The plant climbs through surrounding structures or plants, so set up a trellis early. Spines grow along the leaf veins and stems, so wear gloves when tying it in. Regular pruning makes it bushier and improves flowering and fruiting.
Growing conditions
Full sun, tolerating partial shade. Sandy or loamy, slightly acidic soil with good drainage. Water moderately; keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. In warm climates it flowers all year.
Fruit
Small round fruits start green and turn purplish. In some traditional cuisines the fruits and tender leaves are cooked in soups and stir-fries.
