About this variety
Mullein (Verbascum phlomoides)
General Description
Mullein (Verbascum phlomoides), also known as Yellow Mullein, is a striking biennial or short-lived perennial herbaceous plant from the Scrophulariaceae family. Native to Europe and Asia, it has been cultivated for centuries for its medicinal properties and ornamental value. Mullein is widely recognized for its tall, golden-yellow flower spikes and its historical use in traditional herbal medicine. It thrives in dry, open landscapes and is often found in meadows, roadsides, and rocky slopes, making it a hardy and low-maintenance addition to gardens.
Plant Characteristics
Mullein grows between 100 and 200 cm in height, producing a basal rosette of soft, velvety, gray-green leaves in its first year. In its second year, it sends up a tall, sturdy flowering spike covered in clusters of bright yellow, five-petaled flowers, each measuring about 1.5 to 2 cm in diameter. The plant blooms from late spring to early autumn, attracting bees and butterflies. It is highly drought-resistant and can thrive in poor soils, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and wildflower gardens.
Taste and Benefits
Mullein is highly valued in herbal medicine for its expectorant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. Traditionally, its dried leaves and flowers have been used in teas and infusions to support respiratory health, soothe coughs, and relieve throat irritation. The plant’s mucilage content makes it beneficial for calming inflammation in the lungs and digestive tract. It is also used externally in salves for skin conditions.
Cultivation Recommendations
Mullein thrives in full sun and well-drained, sandy, or loamy soils. Seeds should be sown in early spring or autumn, lightly pressed into the soil, and kept moist until germination occurs, typically within 14 to 21 days. This hardy plant requires minimal watering once established and can tolerate dry conditions. It self-seeds easily, making it a resilient and sustainable addition to naturalized landscapes. Removing spent flower stalks can help manage its spread if needed.
Uses and Benefits
Mullein is widely used for its medicinal properties, particularly for respiratory support and immune system health. In addition, it is an attractive ornamental plant, adding vertical interest to wildflower meadows and pollinator gardens. The plant’s fuzzy leaves and tall flower spikes make it a standout feature in drought-resistant landscaping. Additionally, the dried flowers are used in herbal remedies, while the tall stalks can be incorporated into floral arrangements.
Packaging
The seeds are carefully selected and packed in moisture-resistant packaging to ensure high germination rates and long-term viability.
