About this variety
Garden balsam (Impatiens balsamina) is an annual with rose-like double and semi-double flowers set close along upright stems 30–75 cm tall. Its seed needs light, so press it in rather than burying it. The packet holds 30 seeds.
Also known as: Rose balsam, Balsam Gulab.
Sowing
- Sow outdoors after the last frost, or indoors 4–6 weeks earlier.
- Scatter on moist, fertile soil and press in lightly; do not sow deep.
- Seedlings appear in 7–14 days at 20–25 °C.
- Space plants 20–30 cm apart for airflow.
Light and soil
Full sun to partial shade, in rich, well-draining soil kept evenly moist. Balsam needs regular watering, especially in hot weather, but not waterlogged soil.
Flowers
The flowers come in pink, red, white and purple and appear from early summer into autumn. Leaves are glossy green, lance-shaped and serrated. Remove spent flowers to extend flowering, and feed with a balanced fertiliser every 4–6 weeks.
What can go wrong
Watch for aphids and fungal problems. Overcrowding reduces airflow, so keep to the 20–30 cm spacing.
What you get
One packet of 30 Impatiens balsamina seeds in mixed colours. We do not state a germination percentage for this lot.
FAQ
Should I cover balsam seed?
Only press it in lightly; deep sowing blocks the light it needs.
Does it grow in containers?
