About this variety
Mongolian Dwarf (Solanum lycopersicum, family Solanaceae) is a determinate tomato only 20–40 cm tall that still carries round red fruit of 100–200 g. The packet holds 10 seeds.
Fruit and plant
- Determinate, low plant of 20–40 cm
- Round fruit, 100–200 g, smooth deep red skin, juicy and meaty
- Mildly sweet, slightly tangy taste for salads, sandwiches and sauce
- Little or no pruning needed
Sow into soil at 16–29 °C
Tomato seed germinates well when the soil stays in its optimum range of 16–29 °C. At 20–30 °C seedlings typically appear in 6–8 days. Indoors, cover the seed with 3–6 mm of seed-starting mix. These figures are typical for the species, not a test of this packet.
Growing on
Sow indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Plant out, or into containers, once the danger of frost has passed, 30–40 cm apart. Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil with regular water and an occasional feed.
When to expect fruit
Fruit ripens about 60–65 days after transplanting.
What you get
One packet of 10 seeds of Mongolian Dwarf. Tomato seed typically stays usable for 4 years or more when kept cool, dark and dry, so seed you do not sow this season can wait for the next.
FAQ
Can Mongolian Dwarf grow on a balcony?
Yes. At 20–40 cm it fits containers and balconies; space plants 30–40 cm apart in a bed.
Does it need staking?
It is a low, compact plant that needs minimal pruning; at 20–40 cm a tall stake is not needed, though heavy fruit may rest on the soil, so mulch under it.
