About this variety
Königin der Nacht (Solanum lycopersicum, family Solanaceae), also called Queen of the Night, is an indeterminate tomato with round 60–120 g fruit, orange-red with purplish-black streaks and indigo shoulders. The packet holds 10 seeds.
Fruit and plant
- Indeterminate plant about 1.4 m tall, with dark green, regular leaves
- Mid-season, round fruit of 60–120 g
- Orange-red base, purplish-black streaks and indigo shoulders
- Juicy flesh for fresh eating and salads
Sow into soil at 16–29 °C
Tomato seed germinates well when the soil stays in its optimum range of 16–29 °C. At 20–30 °C seedlings typically appear in 6–8 days. Indoors, cover the seed with 3–6 mm of seed-starting mix. These figures are typical for the species, not a test of this packet.
Growing on
Sow indoors 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost. Transplant when seedlings are 10–15 cm tall and frost has passed, 45–60 cm apart. Give at least 6–8 hours of full sun and well-drained, fertile soil at pH 6.0–7.0; water evenly and feed with a balanced fertiliser every 2–3 weeks.
What you get
One packet of 10 seeds of Königin der Nacht (Queen of the Night). Tomato seed typically stays usable for 4 years or more when kept cool, dark and dry, so seed you do not sow this season can wait for the next.
FAQ
Is Königin der Nacht the same as Queen of the Night?
Yes, Queen of the Night is the English translation of the German name; both refer to this packet.
When is it ripe?
When the base colour has turned orange-red under the dark indigo shoulders; the indigo appears first and does not mean the fruit is ready.
