About this variety
Black Striped Zebra (Solanum lycopersicum, family Solanaceae) is an indeterminate tomato with round 150–200 g fruit, deep mahogany with green-gold stripes. The packet holds 10 seeds.
Fruit and plant
- Vigorous indeterminate vine over 1.8 m tall
- Round, firm fruit of 150–200 g with smooth, glossy skin
- Deep mahogany base marked with green-gold stripes
- Rich, earthy, slightly sweet taste with a tangy finish; for salads, sandwiches, salsa, sauce and drying
Sow into soil at 16–29 °C
Tomato seed germinates well when the soil stays in its optimum range of 16–29 °C. At 20–30 °C seedlings typically appear in 6–8 days. Indoors, cover the seed with 3–6 mm of seed-starting mix. These figures are typical for the species, not a test of this packet.
Growing on
Sow indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost and plant out once the danger of frost has passed, 50–60 cm apart. Support the vine with a sturdy stake or cage. Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil; water regularly, mulch and prune lightly.
When to expect fruit
Fruit ripens about 75–80 days after transplanting and keeps coming through the season.
What you get
One packet of 10 seeds of Black Striped Zebra. Tomato seed typically stays usable for 4 years or more when kept cool, dark and dry, so seed you do not sow this season can wait for the next.
FAQ
How do I tell when Black Striped Zebra is ripe?
The base turns deep mahogany and the stripes show green-gold; the fruit stays striped when ripe, so do not wait for a uniform colour.
How tall does it grow?
Over 1.8 m, so set a stake of that height at planting time.
