About this variety
Xanthi Tobacco Seeds (Nicotiana tabacum)
General Description:
Xanthi is a premium Oriental tobacco variety from the Xanthi region of Greece, renowned for its aromatic, sun-cured leaves. It has been a cornerstone in traditional Mediterranean tobacco blends for centuries, valued for its distinctive flavor and fine texture.
Plant Characteristics:
Xanthi tobacco grows to a modest height of 3–4 feet (0.9–1.2 meters) with small, thin leaves that are light green and slightly crinkled. The leaves cure to a bright golden-yellow color and have a high oil content, contributing to their rich aroma. The plant produces delicate pink flowers in late summer.
Taste and Benefits:
Xanthi offers a rich, aromatic flavor with sweet, spicy, and floral undertones. Its light body and complex fragrance make it ideal for blending in premium cigarettes and pipe tobacco. The smooth, slightly tangy taste provides a unique smoking experience characteristic of fine Oriental tobaccos.
Cultivation Recommendations:
Sow seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost, pressing them lightly onto the soil surface. Maintain a temperature of 75°F (24°C) and keep the soil moist. Germination occurs in 7–14 days. Transplant outdoors after the last frost, spacing plants about 12–18 inches apart. Xanthi thrives in full sun and sandy, well-drained soils, mimicking its native Mediterranean environment. The leaves are sun-cured directly on the plant or harvested and dried under the sun to preserve their unique flavor.
Uses and Benefits:
Ideal for blending in high-quality cigarettes and pipe tobacco, Xanthi is prized for its aromatic, sweet-spicy profile. Its fine leaves also make it suitable for crafting traditional Mediterranean tobacco products.
