Tobacco Seeds – Tobacco Rot Front (Dark, Broadleaf Cigarette and Pipe Variety)
The Tobacco Rot Front is a dark, broadleaf Nicotiana rustica variety, traditionally grown for cigarette and pipe tobacco. Known for its shadow-curing method, this variety has a rich history rooted in Eastern Germany and is now primarily cultivated in Austria, particularly in the Oder region and Northern Baden. Renowned for its resilience to extreme weather, Rot Front is a reliable and versatile tobacco that stands out for its robust character and high-quality leaves.
Origin and History:
Initially cultivated in Eastern Germany, Tobacco Rot Front was prized for its ability to thrive under varying environmental conditions. Its transition to Austria further refined its qualities, making it a staple crop in areas with unpredictable climates. The variety has become synonymous with reliability and adaptability, delivering consistent results even in challenging weather.
Characteristics of Tobacco Rot Front:
• Plant Structure: A conical-shaped plant reaching up to 1.3 meters in height, featuring a robust build and strong growth habit.
• Leaf Quality: Broad, dark green leaves with a wide, oval blade. The mid-tier leaves measure approximately 50x29 cm, providing an ideal size for processing into cigarette and pipe tobacco.
• Flavor Profile: Shadow-curing enhances the deep, earthy flavor of the leaves, with a rich, slightly sweet undertone that is perfect for artisanal blends.
• Flower and Yield: The plant produces pink flowers, with 18–20 usable leaves per plant. These leaves are thick and aromatic, contributing to its bold smoking profile.
• Resilience: Exhibits excellent resistance to extreme weather and unfavorable environmental factors, though it is less resistant to common diseases.
Cultivation Details:
• Growing Cycle: The variety has a maturation period of about 60 days, making it relatively quick to harvest.
• Soil Requirements: Thrives in fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0–7.0. Enriching the soil with organic matter boosts growth.
• Sunlight and Watering: Prefers moderate sunlight and consistent watering to maintain soil moisture, though it adapts well to shadow-curing conditions.
• Harvesting and Processing: Leaves are harvested as they mature, with curing conducted in shaded environments to develop the characteristic dark, aromatic profile of this variety.
