About this variety
Golden Seal Burley Tobacco Seeds (Nicotiana tabacum)
General Description:
Golden Seal Burley is a classic American air-cured tobacco variety, prized for its smooth, light flavor and excellent blending qualities. Originating from the Burley tobacco belt in Kentucky and Tennessee, this variety is known for its bright golden leaves and high-quality yield, making it a staple in cigarette and pipe tobacco production.
Plant Characteristics:
Golden Seal Burley grows up to 5–6 feet (1.5–1.8 meters) tall with broad, thick leaves that can reach 20–24 inches (50–60 cm) in length. The leaves are light green during growth and cure to a bright golden-yellow hue. The plant features a sturdy stalk and produces delicate pink flowers in mid to late summer. Its leaves are known for their low sugar content and high absorptive qualities, making them ideal for flavor additives in tobacco products.
Taste and Benefits:
This variety offers a mild, smooth, and slightly nutty flavor with a light, airy smoke. Its low natural sugar content results in a mellow taste without bitterness, making it a preferred choice for blending in cigarettes, pipe tobacco, and cigars. Golden Seal Burley’s neutral profile allows it to absorb added flavors well, enhancing its versatility in various tobacco products.
Cultivation Recommendations:
Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Lightly press the tiny seeds onto the soil surface, as they need light to germinate. Keep the temperature around 75°F (24°C) and maintain consistent moisture. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days. Transplant outdoors in full sun after the last frost, spacing plants 2–3 feet apart. Golden Seal Burley thrives in well-drained, fertile soil and requires regular watering. The leaves mature from the bottom up and are harvested individually. After harvesting, air-cure the leaves in a shaded, well-ventilated area for 4–8 weeks to achieve the desired golden color and smooth flavor.
Uses and Benefits:
Golden Seal Burley is ideal for crafting high-quality cigarettes, pipe tobacco, and cigars. Its light, smooth flavor makes it perfect for blending or using as a base tobacco. The large, golden leaves are also suitable for wrapping or filler in cigars.
