Havana 32/142 is a Nicotiana tabacum variety, listed in the store as Tobacco Havana 32/142. This page describes the seed as a planting seed for growing the plant, and it keeps to what the product card records. At the moment the card holds the variety name and the species, and nothing more, so the sections below are cautious and general rather than detailed.

Also known as: common tobacco, cultivated tobacco, tambaku (Hindi), tabaco (Spanish/Portuguese), tabac (French), Tabak (German), tütün (Turkish)

The names above are common names of the species Nicotiana tabacum. Havana 32/142 is the name of this particular variety, and no other local names for it are recorded.

Growing Havana 32/142 from seed

The notes below describe how Nicotiana seed is generally handled. They are general guidance for the genus and not measurements taken from a specific seed lot of this variety, so treat them as a starting point and adjust to your own conditions.

• Sowing: Nicotiana seed is very fine, almost like dust, and it is generally sown on the surface of moist, fine soil and left uncovered because it needs light to germinate.
• Watering: moisten the surface gently, from below or with a fine mist, so the tiny seeds stay where they were placed instead of washing together.
• Warmth: Nicotiana tabacum is a warm-season plant, so a warm, bright spot suits the seedlings better than a cold windowsill.
• Seedlings: young plants are small and slow at first. Thin them once the first true leaves have formed, and move them outdoors only when the weather has settled and the soil is warm.
• Site: choose a sunny position with soil that drains well, and leave enough room between plants for air to move around them.

Because the seed is so small, the top layer of the growing medium can dry out quickly. Check the tray often, keep the surface evenly moist, and avoid heavy watering from above.

Planning the site

Nicotiana tabacum is a tall, leafy annual in most gardens, and individual varieties differ in height and leaf size. Because the height of Havana 32/142 is not recorded on the card, it is sensible to give each plant generous space and to place the bed where taller plants will not shade smaller ones.

What is not yet recorded

No seed specifications have been saved for this variety yet. For that reason this page does not state a germination percentage, a viability period, a seed size, a sowing temperature or a number of days to emergence. The origin of the variety, its leaf type, its flower colour and its days to maturity are also not documented on the card, so they are left out here rather than guessed. The product has no photographs in the gallery at the moment, so this text makes no claims about what the plants look like.

FAQ

How do I sow Havana 32/142 tobacco seeds?

As a general rule for Nicotiana, spread the fine seed over the surface of moist soil and do not cover it, because the seed needs light to germinate. Keep the surface evenly moist and the tray in a warm, bright place. No variety-specific sowing temperature is recorded for this seed.

When should I sow Havana 32/142?

The card does not give a sowing date for this variety. Nicotiana tabacum is a warm-season plant, so seedlings are normally started indoors ahead of the season and planted out only after the cold weather has passed. Use your local last frost date as a guide.

How tall does Havana 32/142 grow?

The height of this variety is not recorded on the product card, so no figure is given here. Species-level height varies between varieties and with light, soil and spacing, which is why generous spacing is the safer choice when planning the bed.
