About this variety
Burley 9 Tobacco Seeds (Nicotiana tabacum)
General Description:
Burley 9 is a popular American air-cured tobacco variety, known for its smooth, mild flavor and high yield. This variety is prized for its versatility in cigarette and pipe tobacco blends, offering a balanced taste with a clean, pleasant smoking experience.
Plant Characteristics:
Burley 9 grows up to 5–6 feet (1.5–1.8 meters) tall, with broad, light green leaves that mature into a light golden-brown color after curing. The leaves are thick, slightly crinkled, and ideal for air-curing. The plant produces delicate pink flowers in late summer and thrives in warm, sunny climates with well-drained soil.
Taste and Benefits:
Burley 9 offers a mild, smooth flavor with subtle earthy and slightly nutty undertones. Its moderate nicotine content and clean-burning properties make it ideal for blending in premium cigarettes and pipe tobacco, providing a light yet satisfying smoking experience.
Cultivation Recommendations:
Sow seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Lightly press seeds onto the soil surface, as they require light to germinate. Maintain a temperature of 75°F (24°C) and keep the soil moist. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days. Transplant outdoors after the last frost, spacing plants 2–3 feet apart. Burley 9 thrives in full sun and well-drained, fertile soil. Regular watering and occasional feeding will promote healthy growth. Harvest leaves as they mature from the bottom up, and air-cure them in a shaded, ventilated area for 4–6 weeks.
Uses and Benefits:
Ideal for creating smooth, balanced cigarette and pipe tobacco blends, Burley 9 is valued for its mild flavor and excellent burning properties.
