About this variety
Jalapeño Telica is a hybrid jalapeño (Capsicum annuum, family Solanaceae) with extra-large fruit, about 12 cm long and 4.5 cm wide, larger than a standard jalapeño. Heat is moderate at 3,000–6,000 Scoville heat units. The packet holds 5 seeds.
Fruit and plant
- Fruit about 12 cm (4¾ in) long and 4.5 cm (1¾ in) wide, uniform in shape
- Shiny green, turning red at full maturity
- Thick, crisp walls for stuffing, grilling and pickling
- Plants 60–90 cm (24–36 in) tall with sturdy stems
Sow into soil at 18–35 °C
Start the seed indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Seedlings appear in about 8–9 days when the soil is 25–35 °C; 18–35 °C is the soil range that suits pepper germination, so keep the tray inside it until the first leaves show. Cover the seed with about 6 mm of seed-starting mix.
These figures are typical for the species (emergence was measured with seed about 13 mm deep); they are not a test of this packet.
Planting out
Transplant once seedlings are established and frost has passed. Space plants 60 cm (24 in) apart with 90–120 cm (36–48 in) between rows, in full sun and well-drained soil. Water regularly but avoid waterlogging, which leads to root disease.
When to expect fruit
Fruit is ready about 75 days after transplanting.
What you get: 5 seeds per packet. Pepper seed usually stays usable for about 2 years when kept cool, dark and dry, so you can sow part of the packet and keep the rest. That is a general figure for the species; we do not state a germination percentage for this packet.
FAQ
Why choose Telica over an ordinary jalapeño?
For size: its fruit runs about 12 by 4.5 cm, which leaves more room for stuffing, with a moderate 3,000–6,000 Scoville heat units.
Is it open-pollinated?
No. Telica is sold as a hybrid.
