About this variety
Phlox Star Mix (Phlox drummondii 'Star') is an annual phlox with star-shaped, fringed flowers on compact plants 20–40 cm tall, flowering from late spring to early autumn. The packet holds 50 seeds.
What sets the Star type apart
Each flower has pointed, fringed petals and a white or darker centre, unlike the rounded flowers of ordinary annual phlox. The mix includes pink, red, white and purple. Plants form dense mounds of lance-shaped leaves.
Sowing
- Sow in early spring indoors, or directly outside after the last frost.
- Cover the seed lightly with soil.
- Keep it evenly moist; germination usually takes 10–14 days.
Growing conditions
Full sun to partial shade in well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Water moderately. Plants tolerate heat and, once established, dry conditions. Remove spent flowers to keep them blooming.
Where to use it
Edging, mass plantings, rock gardens, containers and hanging baskets. The flowers also work in small cut arrangements and attract bees and butterflies. The species is native to North America, particularly Texas, which explains its tolerance of heat.
What you get
One packet of 50 seeds of Phlox drummondii Star Mix. We do not state a germination percentage for this lot.
