About this variety

About this species

Centella asiatica is an accepted Apiaceae species with a broad native range across tropical and subtropical parts of Africa, Asia, Australia and the Pacific. Kew describes it as a perennial associated mainly with wet tropical habitats. It forms a low creeping mat with rounded, scalloped leaves on slender stalks.

Sowing guide

  1. Fill a tray or small pot with a fine, clean moisture-retentive yet aerated propagation mix and level the surface.
  2. Scatter the tiny seed thinly on the surface and press gently; cover only with a dusting of fine medium.
  3. Mist carefully and keep warm in bright, indirect light.
  4. Maintain steady surface moisture and humidity while allowing fresh air and preventing the seed from washing into clumps.

Tiny seed is vulnerable to deep burial, drying and forceful watering. Bottom watering or a fine mist can keep the surface stable. Label the tray, keep it evenly damp rather than stagnant, and avoid disturbing it to check for germination.

Seedling care

Thin crowded seedlings and transplant small clumps when they can be handled. Provide bright filtered light and consistent moisture, but preserve oxygen around the roots. Protect plants from frost and rapid drying.

The creeping stems may spread in continuously moist beds or containers. Check local naturalisation guidance and consider contained cultivation. This listing is for botanical growing only and does not make culinary, cosmetic or medicinal claims for any plant part.

Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, storage, temperature, moisture and local conditions. Label the sowing date and treatment, keep the medium clean, and allow a reasonable period before judging the batch.

Growing notes

Review the description and our agrotechnics guide before sowing. Local conditions can change germination timing.
