Adzuki bean, also written azuki bean, is Vigna angularis, a warm-season legume associated with East Asian cultivation. Choose a packet of 15 or 30 seeds for planting. Plants usually form a compact, branching habit rather than a long climbing vine, making them suitable for rows in a sunny garden bed.
The plants develop trifoliate foliage, small yellow flowers, and slender pods containing small red seeds. Grow them in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Sandy loam or loam with incorporated compost provides a practical seed bed. Avoid low areas where water remains around the roots.
Sow after frost risk has passed and the soil is warm. Place seeds about 2 to 3 cm deep and space plants about 10 to 15 cm apart, leaving wider spacing between rows for access and airflow. Keep the soil evenly moist during germination without saturating it. Emergence timing varies with temperature, soil moisture, seed depth, and other local conditions.
Water established plants consistently during flowering and pod formation, while allowing the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings. Mulching can reduce weed pressure and moisture loss. Good airflow and crop rotation help limit common bean-growing problems. In short-season climates, start only when the remaining frost-free period is adequate. No germination rate, maturity date, or harvest quantity is guaranteed.
