About this variety

Pistachio Vera (Pistacia vera) is a deciduous nut tree in the cashew family, Anacardiaceae. The species is native from northeastern Iran through Central Asia to Afghanistan and is associated with temperate climates. This packet contains seeds for growing plants; it does not contain grafted trees or a guaranteed named cultivar.

Pistachio plants are dioecious, meaning male and female flowers normally occur on separate trees. Seed-grown plants vary naturally, and their sex cannot be selected from the seed. Both male and female plants are required for nut production after the trees reach maturity. Because seedlings are genetically variable, fruiting characteristics may differ from commercial grafted cultivars.

Sow in a clean, well-drained seed-starting medium. Keep the medium evenly moist without leaving it waterlogged, and provide warmth, bright light and gentle air circulation. Transplant established seedlings carefully into individual containers. Young plants should be acclimated gradually before exposure to strong sun or outdoor conditions.

Pistachio trees are best suited to climates with long, warm summers and a distinct cool season. Once established they can tolerate relatively dry conditions, but young plants need attentive watering while their root systems develop. Use a free-draining soil or container mix and avoid prolonged saturation.

Choose a packet of 20 or 50 seeds. Store unused seeds sealed in a cool, dry place. Germination and subsequent growth depend on seed handling, temperature, moisture and local growing conditions, so results and emergence time naturally vary.

Growing notes

Review the description and our agrotechnics guide before sowing. Local conditions can change germination timing.
