About this variety

About this species

Lagerstroemia speciosa is an accepted Lythraceae species native from tropical and subtropical Asia to northern Australia. Kew records it as a tree growing mainly in wet tropical habitats. It is commonly called queen's crape myrtle or pride of India and produces large panicles of crinkled pink to purple flowers.

Sowing guide

  1. Fill a tray or small pots with a fine, clean and free-draining propagation mix.
  2. Spread the small winged seeds on the level surface and cover with only a very thin layer.
  3. Mist gently and keep warm in bright, indirect light.
  4. Maintain even surface moisture and regular ventilation, avoiding both deep burial and standing water.

Lightweight seed can be washed away by a coarse watering stream. Use a fine mist or bottom watering and keep the tray labelled. Do not disturb the surface while waiting, and reduce humidity gradually once seedlings appear.

Seedling care

Provide bright light after emergence and introduce direct sun in stages. Thin crowded seedlings and pot on while their roots can still be separated safely. Maintain warmth, drainage and frost protection during early growth.

Queen's crape myrtle develops into a medium to large tree with a spreading crown in suitable climates. Confirm local planting guidance and provide adequate clearance. Flower colour and growth habit vary naturally among seed-grown plants.

Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, storage, temperature, moisture and local conditions. Label the sowing date and treatment, keep the medium clean, and allow a reasonable period before judging the batch.

Growing notes

Review the description and our agrotechnics guide before sowing. Local conditions can change germination timing.
