About this variety
CGN 23209 is a pepper (Capsicum annuum, family Solanaceae) held by the Dutch national genebank in Wageningen, with long, wrinkled pods that ripen from dark green to brown. The packet holds 5 seeds.
Also known as: CGN23209, I 5490 (genebank accession name), IVT 78429 (donor number).
What the genebank record says
- Holder: Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands (CGN), accession CGN23209.
- Acquired on 2 April 1992 from the horticultural breeding institute in Wageningen (donor number IVT 78429).
- Passport note: "Collection M. Holle, via CATIE, Costa Rica". The origin country itself is not recorded.
- Species: filed as Capsicum chinense, but the CGN record notes that a 2020 G2PSol analysis (IBS, HCA and PCA) classes it as annuum. We list it as Capsicum annuum.
Pods and plant
- CGN characterisation: wrinkled pods, dark green when immature and brown when mature; white flowers with purple anthers; semi-erect leaves.
- Our earlier product notes: pods up to 120 mm long and about 25 mm wide, a slightly upright plant about 1.2 m tall, sweet and slightly smoky flavour, medium heat. No Scoville figure is on record.
Sow warm: soil at 18–35 °C
Typical for the species: seed germinates in soil at 18–35 °C and seedlings appear in about 8–9 days at 25–35 °C when seed is sown about 6 mm deep. Our product notes advise starting indoors 8–10 weeks before the last frost at 24–29 °C.
Planting out and harvest
Transplant after the last frost, 45–60 cm apart, in full sun and well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Water regularly but avoid waterlogging, which leads to root disease. Pods mature about 80 days after transplanting.
Keeping spare seed
Pepper seed typically stays usable for about 2 years when kept cool, dark and dry. That is a general species figure; we do not state a germination percentage for this packet.
What you get: 5 seeds per packet.
FAQ
Is CGN 23209 annuum or chinense?
The CGN passport lists chinense, while a 2020 G2PSol genetic analysis noted in the same record places it in annuum. We follow the genetic result.
What colour are the pods when ripe?
Dark green when immature, brown when mature.
Where does it come from?
The record names M. Holle's collection via CATIE in Costa Rica and gives no origin country, so we do not name one.
How long does the seed keep?
About 2 years in cool, dark, dry storage, as a general figure for the species.
