About this variety
These are seeds of Fard dates, from the date palm Phoenix dactylifera (family Arecaceae). The packet holds 5 seeds. Soak them for a day, sow in warm sun, and expect germination to start only after about three weeks.
Also known as: Date palm, Khajur (Hindi, Urdu), Tamr (Arabic), Dátil (Spanish), Datte (French), Dattero (Italian), Dattel (German).
Soak and sow
- Soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours.
- Sow in well-drained soil in a sunny spot.
- Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged.
How long germination takes
For the species, germination typically starts after about 21–26 days and is complete after 38–40 days. A pot with nothing showing at week three is normal; keep it moist and warm.
Growing the seedlings on
Water young palms regularly and feed them now and then with a balanced fertilizer. Too much water in heavy soil is the main risk at this stage.
What the name means
Fard names the date the seeds were taken from. We do not state the fruit, size or years to fruiting of a seed-grown palm, because no figures are on record for this packet.
Storing the seed
Date palm seed is orthodox: dried seed tolerates cold storage. Keep unsown seed dry until you use it.
What you get
5 seeds of Phoenix dactylifera from Fard dates.
