About this variety

About this species

Dalbergia sissoo is an accepted species in the Fabaceae family. Kew records its native range from the southern Arabian Peninsula to Myanmar and describes it as a shrub or tree of seasonally dry tropical habitats. It is commonly known as shisham, sissoo or Indian rosewood.

Sowing guide

  1. Soak sound seeds in room-temperature water before sowing.
  2. Use individual pots or a deep tray filled with an open, free-draining mix.
  3. Cover the seed lightly, water gently and allow excess moisture to drain.
  4. Keep warm with even moisture and good air movement.

Legume seed lots can vary in coat hardness. Soaking helps identify seed that takes up water; do not cut deeply into the seed. A clean, warm medium is preferable to constant saturation.

Seedling care

Give seedlings bright light and move them gradually into direct sun. Pot on before roots become crowded, keeping the root ball intact. Water thoroughly, then allow the surface to begin drying before the next watering.

This is a substantial woody tree suited to warm conditions. Confirm climate, space and local planting guidance before outdoor use, because the species can naturalise beyond cultivation in some regions. Seed-grown trees vary naturally.

Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, storage, temperature, moisture and local conditions. Label the sowing date and treatment, keep the medium clean, and allow a reasonable period before judging the batch.

Growing notes

Review the description and our agrotechnics guide before sowing. Local conditions can change germination timing.
