About this variety

About this species

Butea monosperma is an accepted Fabaceae species native from the Indian subcontinent to Myanmar and Thailand. Kew records it as a tree of seasonally dry tropical habitats. Common names include flame of the forest and palash, referring to the brilliant orange-scarlet flowers that can cover the crown.

Sowing guide

  1. Soak the flat seed in room-temperature water; lightly abrade a small edge only if the coat remains firm and does not take up moisture.
  2. Use a deep pot containing a loose, free-draining propagation mix.
  3. Lay the seed flat, cover shallowly and water gently.
  4. Keep warm with bright light and even moisture, never allowing the container to remain waterlogged.

The seed needs close contact with moist medium but also air around the developing root. Avoid deep burial and aggressive scarification. Record the treatment and leave the labelled pot undisturbed while allowing normal variation in emergence.

Seedling care

Increase direct light gradually and transplant before roots become tightly confined. Water thoroughly during active growth and let the upper layer start drying between waterings. Protect tender seedlings from frost and cold saturation.

This is a woody tree adapted to warm seasonal climates, not a compact houseplant. Check local guidance and provide long-term root and crown space before permanent planting. The listing is for cultivation and makes no medicinal, dye or food-use claims.

Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, storage, temperature, moisture and local conditions. Label the sowing date and treatment, keep the medium clean, and allow a reasonable period before judging the batch.

Growing notes

Review the description and our agrotechnics guide before sowing. Local conditions can change germination timing.
