Bauhinia purpurea is an accepted Fabaceae species native from the Indian subcontinent to Myanmar. Kew records it as a shrub or tree of seasonally dry tropical habitats. It is widely planted as purple orchid tree for its paired, butterfly-like leaf lobes and conspicuous five-petalled flowers.
Sowing guide
- Soak intact seed in room-temperature water; lightly abrade only seed that remains hard and unswollen.
- Use individual pots or a deep tray filled with a free-draining propagation mix.
- Cover to about the thickness of the seed and water gently.
- Keep warm and evenly moist under bright light with good ventilation.
The seed coat can slow water entry, but aggressive cutting is unnecessary and risks the embryo. Record any treatment used. Keep the medium moist rather than saturated while allowing enough time for uneven emergence.
Seedling care
Give seedlings increasing light and pot on before roots become crowded. Water deeply, then let the upper medium begin to dry. Protect tender young plants from frost and prolonged cold wet conditions.
Purple orchid tree develops into a woody shrub or small tree with a spreading crown. Check local naturalisation guidance and provide adequate space before outdoor planting. Flower colour and plant form can vary among seedlings.
