About this variety

About this species

Adenanthera microsperma is an accepted species in the Fabaceae family. Kew records it as a tree native from Indo-China to western Malesia and associated mainly with wet tropical habitats. It is distinct from, though closely related to, Adenanthera pavonina; the smaller seeds and pod characters are useful distinctions.

Sowing guide

  1. Lightly abrade one small area of the hard seed coat without reaching the embryo.
  2. Soak treated seeds in room-temperature water and note which seeds take up moisture.
  3. Sow in a deep pot of loose, free-draining medium and cover to about one seed thickness.
  4. Keep warm and evenly moist with good air movement, never continuously saturated.

Scarification is intended only to let water pass the hard coat. Stop as soon as the outer layer is breached and do not cut deeply. Hard-coated seed can emerge unevenly, so keep a record of treatment and allow time.

Seedling care

Give established seedlings bright light, increasing direct sun gradually. Pot on before roots circle tightly and keep the root ball intact. Protect young growth from cold and from prolonged waterlogging.

This is a tropical woody tree that needs long-term room and warmth. Check local planting guidance before outdoor establishment, because suitability and naturalisation risk differ by region. Seed is offered for cultivation, not for food or medicinal use.

Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, storage, temperature, moisture and local conditions. Label the sowing date and treatment, keep the medium clean, and allow a reasonable period before judging the batch.

Growing notes

Review the description and our agrotechnics guide before sowing. Local conditions can change germination timing.
