Cacti are hardy plants that can survive in a variety of conditions. However, to grow them properly, you must follow some rules.
1. Choosing a landing site
Cacti prefer well-lit places protected from the wind. In the shade, cacti can stretch out and lose their decorative effect.
2. Soil
Cacti prefer well-drained soil that is low in nutrients. To plant cacti, you can use special soil for cacti or prepare it yourself by mixing sand, perlite and turf soil in equal proportions.
3. Watering
Cacti tolerate drought well, so they need to be watered sparingly. During the growing season (spring-summer), cacti are watered once a week or two, depending on the air temperature and soil moisture. During the dormant period (autumn-winter), watering is reduced to once a month or less.
4. Feeding
Cacti are fed once a month during the growing season. For feeding, use special fertilizers for cacti.
5. Trimming
Cacti do not need pruning. However, if necessary, you can remove damaged or dead parts of the plant.
6. Transplant
Cacti are replanted every 2-3 years, when they no longer fit in the old pot. Transplantation is carried out in the spring.
7. Diseases and pests
Cacti are relatively resistant to diseases and pests. However, if not properly cared for, they can be attacked by the following pests:
- Aphids: the pest feeds on the sap of leaves, causing the leaves to become deformed and fall off. Insecticides are used to control the pest.
- Spider mite: the pest feeds on the sap of leaves, causing the leaves to turn yellow and fall off. Insecticides are used to control the pest.
- Root bug: the pest feeds on the roots of plants, causing the plants to rot. Fungicides are used to control the pest.
8. Reproduction
Cacti are propagated by seeds, cuttings or layering.
Seed propagation: Cactus seeds are sown in spring in well-drained soil. The seeds germinate within a few weeks.
Cuttings: Cactus cuttings are taken in spring or summer. The cuttings are planted in well-drained soil and covered with film or glass to create greenhouse conditions. The cuttings take root within a few weeks.
Layering: Laying of cacti can be done in spring or autumn. The cuttings are separated from the mother plant and planted in well-drained soil. The cuttings take root within a few weeks.
Additional Tips
- For cacti to bloom abundantly, it is necessary to provide them with sufficient light and heat.
- Cacti tolerate short-term frosts well, but can die in prolonged cold weather.
