About this variety

About this species

The price source spells the name “Swietenia mahogany”; the accepted botanical name is Swietenia mahagoni. Kew records this Meliaceae tree as native from southern Florida through the Caribbean, growing mainly in wet tropical habitats, and reports it as Near Threatened. It is commonly called West Indian or small-leaved mahogany.

Sowing guide

  1. Use fresh, intact winged seed and a deep pot containing a loose, free-draining mix.
  2. Lay or insert the seed shallowly and cover with only a thin layer of medium.
  3. Water gently and keep warm in bright, indirect light.
  4. Maintain even moisture and ventilation without prolonged saturation.

Winged mahogany seed can lose viability during long or unsuitable storage. Sow promptly, handle carefully and avoid deep burial. Do not disturb the developing root merely to check progress.

Seedling care

Increase light gradually after emergence and pot on before roots become constrained. Keep young plants warm, evenly watered and protected from frost. A stable container helps prevent damage to the developing stem.

West Indian mahogany is a large, long-term tree project. Confirm climate, space, conservation controls and local planting requirements before establishment. Seed-grown trees vary and are not guaranteed to have a particular timber form or yield.

Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, storage, temperature, moisture and local conditions. Label the sowing date and treatment, keep the medium clean, and allow a reasonable period before judging the batch.

Growing notes

Review the description and our agrotechnics guide before sowing. Local conditions can change germination timing.
