About jojoba
Simmondsia chinensis is an accepted species and the only member of the Simmondsiaceae family. Kew records its native range from southern California to central Utah and northern Mexico, where it grows in desert and dry-shrubland habitats.
Sowing guide
- Soak seeds in room-temperature water before sowing.
- Use a clean, very free-draining mix in a deep pot.
- Sow about one seed-width deep and keep warm in bright, indirect light.
- Water gently and avoid prolonged wetness around the seed.
Growing on
Give established seedlings gradually stronger light and excellent drainage. Jojoba is adapted to dry climates, but young roots still need careful, even moisture while they establish.
Seedlings are naturally variable, and male and female plants cannot be determined from seed.
Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, temperature, moisture and local conditions. Label the sowing and keep notes so later batches can be adjusted.
