About this variety

About this species

Oroxylum indicum is an accepted Bignoniaceae species native from the Indian subcontinent through southern China and Indo-China to Malesia. Kew records it mainly from wet tropical habitats. Common names include Indian trumpet tree and midnight horror; mature trees carry very large compound leaves and long, flat capsules filled with winged seeds.

Sowing guide

  1. Use fresh, intact winged seed and a clean tray of fine, free-draining propagation medium.
  2. Lay the seed flat and cover very lightly, leaving it close to the surface rather than burying it deeply.
  3. Mist gently and keep warm in bright, indirect light.
  4. Maintain even surface moisture and regular ventilation without creating a sealed, saturated environment.

Papery winged seeds are easily displaced by heavy watering and may lose performance during unsuitable storage. A level surface and fine mist improve contact. Leave the labelled sowing undisturbed and reduce humidity gradually after emergence.

Seedling care

Provide bright light after germination and introduce direct sun gradually. Pot seedlings on before the developing root system becomes congested, keeping the root ball intact. Maintain warmth, drainage and protection from frost.

This species develops into a sizeable tropical tree with a broad crown and unusually large leaves. Confirm climate, space and local planting guidance before permanent outdoor use. Seed is supplied for ornamental or botanical cultivation, without medicinal or dietary claims.

Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, storage, temperature, moisture and local conditions. Label the sowing date and treatment, keep the medium clean, and allow a reasonable period before judging the batch.

Growing notes

Review the description and our agrotechnics guide before sowing. Local conditions can change germination timing.
