Dodonea is a genus of herbaceous plants of the Legume family. In nature, there are about 15 species of dodonea, which grow in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia and America.
1. The following types of dodonea are grown in culture:
- Dodonea viscosa is an ornamental plant with large leaves covered with a sticky coating.
- Dodonea viscosa var. glutinosa is a variety of viscous dodonea with larger leaves.
- Dodonea reticulata is an ornamental plant with fern-like leaves.
2. Variety selection
When choosing a dodonea variety, the following factors must be taken into account:
- Purpose of cultivation: Dodonea can be used as an ornamental crop.
- Plant height: The height of dodonea reaches 30-60 cm.
- Leaf color: Dodoneya viscose and Dodonea adhesive have green leaves, and Dodonea reticulata have green leaves with a silver tint.
3. Soil preparation
Dodoneya is a light-loving plant, so for its cultivation it is necessary to choose sunny areas. Dodoneya prefers fertile, loose and well-drained soils with a neutral or slightly alkaline reaction.
4. Landing
Dodonea can be planted in open ground in the spring, when the soil temperature reaches +10 °C. The planting depth is 5-10 cm. The distance between plants is 20-30 cm.
5. Plant care
Dodoneya is an unpretentious plant, but to obtain good growth and development, the following measures must be taken:
- Watering: Dodoneya is a moisture-loving plant, so during the growing season it is necessary to regularly water the plants, preventing the soil from drying out. In hot and dry weather, watering is carried out daily.
- Fertilizing: During the period of active plant growth, 2-3 fertilizing with mineral fertilizers is carried out. The first feeding is carried out in the phase of 3-4 true leaves, the second - in the budding phase, the third - in the flowering phase.
- Weeding: It is necessary to weed regularly so that they do not choke the plants.
6. Harvest
Dodonea leaves can be collected throughout the season. Leaves are cut with scissors or a sickle.
Additional Tips
- Dodonea prefers sunny places, but can also grow in partial shade.
- Dodonea is a moisture-loving plant, but regular watering promotes more intensive growth and development of plants.
- Dodoneya does not require frequent feeding. It is enough to apply fertilizer 2-3 times a season.
