Tomato Willard Wynn (Solanum lycopersicum)

Tomato Willard Wynn is a rare heirloom variety developed by Willard Wynn of Rockcastle County, Kentucky, USA. This variety was selectively bred over years from a German yellow tomato to adapt to the conditions of the southern Appalachian region.

The fruits are large, weighing between 300 to 500 grams, beefsteak-type, round with slight flattening at the poles, ribbing at the shoulders, and gently wavy tops. At maturity, they display a stunning two-toned appearance: a yellow base with a red blush, most prominent near the apex. The flesh mirrors this bicolor pattern and offers a delightful sweet, fruity flavor.

Cultivation Details:
Growth Habit: Indeterminate, reaching about 1.8 meters in height.
Foliage: Regular leaf variety.

Climatic Adaptation: Well-suited to diverse growing conditions.

Planting Recommendations:
Soil: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil with a pH of 6.0–7.0.
Sowing: Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost date. Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep and keep the soil moist until germination, which typically occurs in 7–14 days.
Transplanting: When seedlings are 10–15 cm tall and the risk of frost has passed, transplant them to their permanent location, spacing plants 45–60 cm apart.
Sunlight: Requires full sun exposure (6–8 hours daily).
Watering: Provide consistent, even watering while avoiding overwatering or allowing the soil to dry out.
Fertilization: Apply balanced organic fertilizers every 2–3 weeks.

The first harvest is typically ready 85–90 days after transplanting. This variety is well-regarded for its resilience and ability to produce abundant, high-quality fruits.
