The trunk of Sabal minor is underground, with no developed aboveground trunk or it is short. The leaves are fan-shaped, rigid, bluish-green, growing from 30 cm to 1.5-2 m in length. Leaf blades are 70-100 cm long, radially dissected into folded linear segments up to 40 in number. The inflorescences are compound, erect, branched in the upper part, up to 2-2.5 m long and 2-3 cm wide at the base. Flowers are 3.5-5.2 mm in size. The fruit is a spherical drupe with a thin pericarp, 7-10 mm in diameter, brownish-black or almost black, shiny. The seeds are rounded, 5-7 mm in diameter, brown in color, slightly flattened.
Native range: Southeastern United States, the Caribbean, and Central America. Climate zones: tropical to subtropical. Typical habitats: swamps, damp soils, along riverbanks and reservoirs. Altitude range: up to 100 m.
